AI has revolutionized the healthcare industry and experienced tremendous growth across the sector in the past two decades. When compared to dentistry medicine and dentistry, AI has the capabilities to revolutionize the sector by identification of structures, diagnosis of diseases, and prediction of treatment outcomes.

AI, a branch of computer science learns specific patterns by teaching the program to take actions that mimic human learning and problem-solving capabilities. Healthcare currently utilizes some of the most common branches of AI which include machine learning and deep learning. In dentistry, AI is used extensively in dental laboratories and is playing a growing role in dental education.

AI techniques that are potentially utilized in the dental field include artificial neural networks (ANNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). ANNs help to detect patterns within the provided data and teach machines to identify them whereas CNN’s help to analyze visual images and image diagnostics.

Clinical application of AI in dentistry in various fields such as Radiology, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral pathology, etc. It can also help in detecting dental decay, oral cancer, NLP usage in the operatory. Assistance to the dental providers with valuable information in real-time and increased clinician’s ability to measure the effectiveness of different treatment modalities.

The implementation of AI also suffers from multiple challenges like sharing of healthcare data, setting up mechanisms to control the quality of algorithms, the dependability on the accuracy of annotations, and labeling of the dataset on the quality of predictions performance of AI systems.

The use of AI is viewed as a complementary asset for assuring safe and controlled assistance to humans and informed decisions in dentistry. As various AI systems for diverse dental disciplines are being developed and have produced encouraging preliminary results, a future for AI in the health care system cannot be discounted. AI systems show promise as a great aid to oral health professionals.
