The Challenge
The client had LED footwear but no digital layer, which kept it a fashion item rather than a connected experience. Owners could not personalise lighting, sync LEDs with music, or keep the pair in step. At festivals there was no way to find friends, and no route to update firmware once units shipped.
Lighting modes fixed at manufacture.
Left and right shoes operating independently.
Firmware unchangeable once units shipped.
Sales and inventory unlinked to the device.
Approach & Solution
smartData delivered a four-part ecosystem: a React Native mobile app, a cross-platform Bluetooth SDK, an e-commerce site and an admin console. Device control uses chunked transfer, command queues and acknowledgement-based flow control, holding command latency under 200 milliseconds and keeping both shoes synchronised.
Because LEDs, location, microphone and Bluetooth drain battery quickly, adaptive energy modes were designed with dynamic location sampling, brightness throttling and wake-up optimisation. Pairing security uses code-based bonding and signed writes, with location sharing restricted to predefined friend groups.
Key Features
Left and right shoes kept in step.
LED effects driven by what is playing.
Group tracking limited to chosen contacts.
Firmware and diagnostics handled in the field.

Final Outcome
Owners personalise and sync their footwear, find each other in crowded venues, and receive firmware improvements after purchase — while the business sells, ships and supports the device from one console.
